At Asia’s largest Alang Sosiya ship breaking yard near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, truckers are on indefinite strike. Truckers started their strike today on the issue of weigh bridge dispute with ship-breakers.
According to Truck Association leader Karansinh, Alang-Sosiya ship breaking yard has government weigh bridges for accurate weight results but Ship-breakers insist to use only their owned private weigh bridges that are situated in their plots. They refuse to approve government weigh bridge results. Results of weigh bridges that are owned by ship-breakers are doubtful and rigged.
Karansinh says that differences between government weigh bridges and Ship breaker owned weigh bridges generally are found as high as around 60 to 100 Kg per truck, loaded with scrap. This is good for Ship-breakers but not for truckers because when trucker reach to the unloading destination and passes through accurate weigh bridge situated there, weight difference issue arises due to which each truck is paid around Rs. 3000 to 4000 less.
Most of the around 300 regular Alang truckers supply scrap to rolling mills situated in Sihor and other centres.
