Initial observations by Engineering faculties in Gujarat confirm that new Engineering syllabus which is to be introduced in the state this year is tougher and at par with institutes of excellence such as IIT and MIT.

This year Gujarat government has introduced newly formed Gujarat Technological University(GTU). First year batches of all 47 bachelor engineering colleges in the state are to be affiliated with this university. In next two years, second and third year batches will also be affiliated with GTU. Common syllabus is to be introduced in all 47 engineering colleges across the state under the umbrella of GTU.

Earlier Chemistry and Physics both subjects were compulsory in all engineering branches but now experts have made these subjects optional.

In news syllabus, Engineering Chemical subject will be compulsory only for Chemical, Textile technology, Textile processing, Rubber technology and Plastic technology engineering branches. While Engineering Physics will be a compulsory subject for Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer, I.T, I.C and Civil engineering branches only.

In the era of global warming and green house effect, Environmental engineering will be taught as a new subject to engineering students.

Education of Mathematics has been made tougher. Earlier there were only two sections in mathematics: Maths-1 and Maths-2 but now Maths 1 and 2 are to be combined in one section:Maths 1. Moreover additional newly introduced three sections: Maths 2, Maths 3 and Maths 4 are also added. Observations by professors confirm that new sections contain more difficult and tougher chapters.

English as a subject was taught only theoretically earlier but now in new syllabus practical session has been introduced for better communicational depth in English.

It should be noted that Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi had inaugurated Gujarat Technological University in Ahmedabad last year exactly at the time when Gujarat assembly elections 2007 were announced by election commission from Delhi. The bill for formation of Gujarat Technological University was introduced in Gujarat assembly in March 2007 to clear a path for achieving excellence in engineering education in Gujarat.
