Night landing facility at Gujarat’s Surat airport from January 2009

The Surat airport will soon have a night landing facility. Rs 2 crore Instrument Landing System imported from Germany for making night landing facility possible at the Surat airport has been arrived. Setting up the system will take less than two months.
Once operational the night landing system will facilitate smooth operations during fog and rainy atmosphere too at the airport. Modern terminal building, Air Traffic Control tower, Fire station, DVAR systems are already activated at the airport. Runway of the Surat airport has been recently expanded to 2250 metre(7382 ft).
Surat is India’s official fastest growing city with an annualized GDP growth rate of 11.5 per cent over the past seven fiscal years. Surat is also India’s richest city with an average annual household income of Rs0.45 million or over $11,000. Between 2004-5 and 2007-8 Surat’s middle class doubled in size and its poor reduced by a third.
Eight out of ten diamonds sold in the world are polished in Surat. It is a major production centre for synthetic textiles in India. Neighboring Hazira boasts of an impressive list of corporate big-wigs such as Reliance, Essar, Larsen and Toubro, Shell, and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, just to name a few.
However Surat got it’s airport after more than a decade long struggle. Facilities at Surat airport are not up to the mark though ample possibilities of traffic. Things at the airport are developing at very slow pace in this India’s fastest growing city.

As far as south gujarat is concerned, especially those in the industrial belt, their environment has been turned into hell in the name of development, and Modi government is no exception. The same BJP MLAs used to participate in pollution clean up movement, but after coming to power, the stinging smell of our Mother rivers turned into gutter does not reach Gandhinagar, even when Satellite images blatantly show the devastating extent of pollution in the region and in the water tables. When it comes to Ram Setu, these politicians bring in Greenpeace, but when the same Greenpeace highlights the grave pollution thrown into Mother rivers from Vapi to Ankleshwar, these BJP MLAs turn the other face like a son who disowns their mother, and allows her to be used for sewage while making money off of selling her. How disgraceful has been our Hindu society turned into.

In the rapidly advancing world economy, the overall development of any region is completely dependent on how the region deals with its mass transportation and communication infrastructure.
“Under CM’s leadership, the progress in the state is noticeable and commendable. However for the equitable development of the state, it is very imperative that all modes of transportation, namely road, rail, sea, river and air are fully developed in total coordination to benefit the entire state.
With this pragmatic approach in mind, we strongly foresee the need for additional international airports in the state. Northern part of the state is served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. However, the southern and western parts of the state lack the international connectivity that an international airport provides. This can be achieved by at least two international Greenfield airports somewhere near Surat and Rajkot. These airports will provide the stimulus for dramatic development of the surrounding regions, thereby helping the entire state of Gujarat move forward.
We hope you agree that a coordinated effort that serves all parts of Gujarat is critical for the continued economic and social progress of our great state, the growth engine of India.
