Night landing facility at Gujarat’s Surat airport from January 2009
Night landing facility at Gujarat’s Surat airport from January 2009
By our correspondent
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 18 November, 2008
The Surat airport will soon have a night landing facility. Rs 2 crore Instrument Landing System imported from Germany for making night landing facility possible at the Surat airport has been arrived. Setting up the system will take less than two months.
Once operational the night landing system will facilitate smooth operations during fog and rainy atmosphere too at the airport. Modern terminal building, Air Traffic Control tower, Fire station, DVAR systems are already activated at the airport. Runway of the Surat airport has been recently expanded to 2250 metre(7382 ft).
Surat is India’s official fastest growing city with an annualized GDP growth rate of 11.5 per cent over the past seven fiscal years. Surat is also India’s richest city with an average annual household income of Rs0.45 million or over $11,000. Between 2004-5 and 2007-8 Surat’s middle class doubled in size and its poor reduced by a third.
Eight out of ten diamonds sold in the world are polished in Surat. It is a major production centre for synthetic textiles in India. Neighboring Hazira boasts of an impressive list of corporate big-wigs such as Reliance, Essar, Larsen and Toubro, Shell, and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, just to name a few.
However Surat got it’s airport after more than a decade long struggle. Facilities at Surat airport are not up to the mark though ample possibilities of traffic. Things at the airport are developing at very slow pace in this India’s fastest growing city.

good work. but what abt the flights from surat to differnt parts of india and the world? only single flight is operating at present . surat-new delhi and that to indian airlines……………………
WHAT THING……..SURAT NEED ……….URGENTLY……?
1) SURAT PRIVATE AIRPORT………SO SURAT DEVELOPMENT BECOME MORE FAST.
2) RIVER FRONT PROJECT LIKE AHMEDABAD HAVE.
3) SURAT OWN BUSINESS CHANNEL HELPFUL ALL GUJARAT AND WORLD.
4) PUTTING NAVSARI AGRICULTURE UNIVERSITY WORLD CLASS LEVEL
As far as south gujarat is concerned, especially those in the industrial belt, their environment has been turned into hell in the name of development, and Modi government is no exception. The same BJP MLAs used to participate in pollution clean up movement, but after coming to power, the stinging smell of our Mother rivers turned into gutter does not reach Gandhinagar, even when Satellite images blatantly show the devastating extent of pollution in the region and in the water tables. When it comes to Ram Setu, these politicians bring in Greenpeace, but when the same Greenpeace highlights the grave pollution thrown into Mother rivers from Vapi to Ankleshwar, these BJP MLAs turn the other face like a son who disowns their mother, and allows her to be used for sewage while making money off of selling her. How disgraceful has been our Hindu society turned into.
In the rapidly advancing world economy, the overall development of any region is completely dependent on how the region deals with its mass transportation and communication infrastructure.
“Under CM’s leadership, the progress in the state is noticeable and commendable. However for the equitable development of the state, it is very imperative that all modes of transportation, namely road, rail, sea, river and air are fully developed in total coordination to benefit the entire state.
With this pragmatic approach in mind, we strongly foresee the need for additional international airports in the state. Northern part of the state is served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. However, the southern and western parts of the state lack the international connectivity that an international airport provides. This can be achieved by at least two international Greenfield airports somewhere near Surat and Rajkot. These airports will provide the stimulus for dramatic development of the surrounding regions, thereby helping the entire state of Gujarat move forward.
We hope you agree that a coordinated effort that serves all parts of Gujarat is critical for the continued economic and social progress of our great state, the growth engine of India.
Weel i thnk Surat is India’s 9th largest city but there is no cricket staduimin it so i must thnk sport ministry of guj. must see to it…
when surat will get an full fledged international airport?
Please give International airport to Surat
Narendra modiji please kuch kariye Surat mein International airport baniye
we know that surat will get the night landing facility but when.
please connect surat with other cities & construct the terminal building beautiful and with every facility.
there is no any auto or taxi service at surat airport.
why didn’t you paste a photo of new terminal building?
leader from suat should talk to kingfisher , Jet airlines to connect surat to delhi, mumbai, jaipur, ahmedabad etc ASAP.
And timing should be to connect with international flight. surat shoul have cricket stadium too.
Although the development of gujarat during Modi’s govt has been quite impressive, the development has been focused upon regions around Ahmedabad, Vadodara and now to kutchh up to some extent. Surat and Rajkot has been the victims. Both the cities are developing on their own without any help from the state government, as a result not utilising their full potential. Surat with a population of over 4 million without a good airport is a shame. As far as cricket stadium is concerned, mostly a cricket association would have one international ground only. So Saurashtra, Gujarat and Vadodara each having one. While if we focus on the development issue, Surat and Rajkot needs an urgent attention from state government just as ahmedabad and vadodara have been getting it for years. If Gujarat wants to be the leading state, state govt. needs to give equal importance to all the cities. The idea of Surat and Rajkot having international airports came up in light some time ago but nothing concrete has happened after that on this issue.
Let’s hope govt. realises this as early as possible and we develope all four big cities and not the only two dear ones to govt.
Vadodara is too a strong candidate to have an international airport. In fact there is proposal made by AAI (Aiport Authority of India) to setup an new International Airport at Vadodara. AAI has asked land for expansion of new Runway and Taxiways from the State Government. But Modiji is not interested in Vadodara. State government has focused only on Ahmedabad, South Gujarat and Kutchh region.
It is FALSE that development has been focused on Ahmedabad and Vadodara Region. Remember there are large no of MOUs has happened in Southern Gujarat and Kutchh region then Ahmedabad and Vadodara region. In fact Vadodara is loosing complete focus and ignored completely by Modiji. There are no significance projects running in this region that can change the face of the City.
Although, Vadodara is developing slowly but steadily at its own pace. It has more than 3.5 million people. There are many numbers of multinational companies including Engineering, Software, BPOs, Automobile Components and many more. This is only because of the geographical locations and proximity of Ahmedabad. There is good numbers of NRI from near by Anand, Godhra, Dahod, Karjan, Jambusar, and Vadodara district itself.
Surat being the 9th largest city of India needs an International Airport very badly to put itself on the world map. The Fastest growing city in the world. Last 2 decades it is the mirror image of surge in world economy. It is the Diamond and Textile capital of world. The Textile, Diamond and other Industrial leaders of the Surat and Southern Gujarat region should urge Modiji for new International Airport.
As far as night parking facility is concern I don’t think this would happen ever in Surat. Vadodara Airport has large parking bay available for night parking. Moreover, Runway of Vadodara is longer and wider than Surat airport. Large carriers such as Airbus 330, Boeing 767 and MD DC 10-30 can land and takeoff very easily. Refueling facility is also available here. I don’t think AAI would spend another 1000 crore of rupees for building up new infrastructure at Surat.
I doubt of Mumbai air traffic to be diverted in case of any emergency. Pune is having 2 runways and parking facility and it is very close to Mumbai too.
So very less chances are for Surtis for having an International Airport and Night parking facility at Surat Airport.
i thing about surat when was came here(surat) surat isn’t progresive city bt now day surat is the one of the city of gujrat even india also.lot of facility is in surat.bt when they will start prograsive work they don’t get good facitily some time tarfic is too much bad. i m just thinging about that.bt i like most SURAT.i love SURAT.
surat is fatest developing ciy in india. but what abt the other flights we go kolkata from mumbai so there should be surat-kolkata flights soon…
Akikji harkhu english lakhta to sikho !! pachi flight ni methi maro !!
Is anyone knows why jet or kingfisher is not interesting to connect surat with mumbai ?
There should be surat-mumbai flight in the morning and evening for international passengers.
it very good
Surat is merely 250 kms away from Mumbai. It might not be feasible for airlines to operate large no. of flights. It takes merely 10-15 minute to reach Surat to Mumbai by flight but it takes 1 hour for taxing, luggage clearance etc.
Due to some technical aspects it is not feasible for airlines to operate from Surat to Mumbai. Airliners should seek opportunities for other segment such as Surat-Delhi, Surat-Jaipur, Surat-Indore, Surat-Guwahatti etc.
surat is very good i love u surat
surat is best city than other cities
it is very good for investment
it is like finance manager of india, its provide most financial help to indian govt.
surat has 1 record of higest fly overs in india
Ahmedabad has record of highest bridges on a river passing by a city !!!
SURAT IS WELL DEVELOPED BY MANY THINGS, BUT THERE SHOULD BE SOME STRICK RULES AND REGULATION. IF SURAT AIRPORT WILL BECOME INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT THEN IT CAN GAIN HUGE INCOME FOR THE SURAT GOVERNMENT. BECAUSE MOST OF THE BUSSIUNESS CLASS PERSON IS LOCATED IN SURAT. IT CAN BREAK THE EARNING OF MUMBAI AIRPORT.
SO WE ARE WAITING FOR MR NARENDRA MODI TO SHOW HIS POWER TO CHANGE THE FUTURE OF SURAT.
Surat is the metropolis of India as it has population of 6 million+ it has replaced Ahmedabad as largest city of Gujarat.Still city lacks a full fledged international airport.be it anyway I ask why there is no world-class stadium at Surat? Surat can be a regular cricket venue in India..It can generate extreme revenues due to cricket-crazy public and stadium will always be jam packed. If Dharamsala with just 0.2 million population can have stadium, Surat with 6 million deserves it anyday… All the metro cities are budding cricket venues except for Surat, I dont know what mistake has Surat done.Maybe it lies in Gujarat state which has stadiums in abundance. But still, Surat needs what it deserves.
When started flights from the surat airport to abroads
this’s the fact. Surat metro. Popultn 5.1 million. Area 333 km/sq. GDP 11.5 per anum. The diamond, textile, yarn ,flyover capital. Figures are enough to prove the megapolish of surat. It urgently requires interntnl airport as well as stadium
well i think 1st need of international airport in surat after that the stadium will automatically planed in surat……
Yes………..Surat needs international Airport………….mumbai is toooo long………it can be covered many cities like Navsari, Bilimora & Vapi…………..& surti’s need it
