Surat, DeshGujarat, 14 June, 2009
The government of Gujarat has deployed extra police force including the State Reserve Police(SRP) unit in Surat to maintain law and order situation during a Bandh call given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) on Monday. Extra police force has been brought from areas of Southern Gujarat to the city.
The force has been deployed in communal sensitive areas to avoid any sort of communal tension. There are chances of communal tension because VHP has given a bandh call to protest a rape incident in which a Hindu girl was kidnapped from the road, rapped inside the car and filmed with intention to blackmail by three Muslim youths.
The incident had happened on Friday. All three culprits Shahid Saiyad, Tareek Saiyad and Abu Bakar are in Police custody. Two of them are sons of serving policemen.
On Sunday evening, VHP’s Surat unit staged dharna in the city, where a large banner ‘We will not allow Gandhi’s Gujarat to become Taliban’s Afghanistan’ was exhibited.
Talking to media at the place of dharna, VHP’s Ramvilas Dasji Maharaj said, “Rapist youths’ fathers are serving the police force and enjoying income from the government. They should be removed from their jobs.”
President of VHP’s Surat unit, Utkarsh Patel said, “Fathers of rapists should be immediately suspended from the police force. Those policeman who even can’t handle their own sons are unfit to serve the society.”
VHP Surat’s Abhay Maharaj demanded resignation of Gujarat police chief Khandwawala. He also demanded removal of fathers of the rapists from the police force. Abhay Maharaj also demanded formation of special bench to give justice to the victim teen-age girl within one month time.
VHP’s Secretary, Surat unit in his statement said, “The Home minister wants to suppress Monday’s Surat Bandh due to political reasons. But he will not be able to suppress the feelings of the people. Even policemen are not happy with the Surat rape incident in which sons of policemen are involved.”
Minister of state for Home, Amit Shah had requested all the organizations to cancel the bandh call. Majority of organizations responded positively to the minister’s request, but the VHP has continued with its call.
