Junagadh’s Bhavnath fair – A video
DeshGujarat Video
The video presented above is about Gujarat’s Bhavnath fair. Bhavnath fair is celebrated for five days every year on the occasion of Mahashivratri(usually in February or March, the fair is on right now). Maha Shivratri is a festival devoted to lord Shiva. Shaivait saffron dressed sadhus and naga baba from all over the India participate in this fair.
The grand attraction of this fair is a march of Naga babas that happens on Mahashivratri evening after 9 p.m. Naked Sadhus march in a religious procession for three hours, they exhibit glimpses of their sword fight practices and other interesting warrior displays during the march. Finally at 12.00 in midnight they reach to the Bhavnath Mandir’s Mrugi kund(tank) and take bath there.
Bhavnath fair is mini version of Kumbh mela. In Kumbh mela sadhus take bath in a river in day light and all akhadas participate in it. In Bhavnath fair sadhus take bath in Mrugi tank in the midnight and only three akhadas(groups of sadhus) participate. Kumbh mela comes once in four years, Bhavnath Mela comes every year. Bhavnath fair is a must visit that can be cherished for life time.
