AMC sweepers stay away from duty in Muslim dominated areas
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 28 May, 2010
Ahmedabad’s riot affected Muslim dominated wall city areas were not cleaned, and drainage calls were not attended by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s sweepers on Friday. Such situation might continue for some more days.
Following the attack on Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation sweeper Ghanshyam Chauhan on Thursday by sharp weapon in Muslim dominated Kalupur area, the sweepers have decided not to clean streets and drainage in Muslim dominated areas affected by riots. Ghanshyam was on duty when he was attacked by group of Muslims.
According to sources, a decision to boycott sanitation services in Muslim dominated area is informal and has been taken at the union level. According to a union leader, the sweepers are informed verbally, not to visit Muslim areas for their own safety.
Looking at the present situation, AMC officials are not likely to take any action against absent sweepers due to safety reason.
Similar boycott had happened during 2002 riots in wall city area of Ahmedabad, after Hindu sweepers were targeted by Muslims in area of their dominance. This had caused severe health crises in Muslim areas.
