“Will meet Modi for development of Gujarati film industry”
Ahmedabad, 27 November, 2010
“I will meet Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to suggest him about what should be done for development of Gujarati film industry,” famous bollywood film maker Vipul Amrutlal Shah said today in Ahmedabad.
Shah was talking with media persons at IIM Ahmedabad where he was to judge a film making competition on social issues.
When journalists asked him about his opinion on revival of Gujarati film industry, Shah’s first reaction was that there should be proper infrastructure in place.
Shah said the Gujarat government should abolish the policy of giving subsidy to Gujarati films. Instead the government should shift that amount to awards. There would be competition to grab Rs.50 lakh award for best film, and one would make good film to get it. At present there’s a scenario where Gujarati films are produced for getting subsidy benefit. For five lakh subsidy, one would not make good film.
Shah had made a Gujarati film Dariya Chhoru in late 90s. When asked about it, he said, “Dariya Chhory happened 11 years back. Gujarati film industry is still in same condition as it was 11 years back, or should we say the condition has worsen. Look at the other states where regional film industry has flourished amazingly.”
Shah expressed his opinion that similar to Maharashtra, the Gujarat government should also make it compulsory for multiplexes to screen native language films.
The multiplexes charging money from film producer to screen their movie is very sad thing according to Shah. “It should be on sharing bases. The condition of cinema halls is not up to the mark, that issue also needs attention.”
