Municipal Commissioner Shri Guruprasad Mohapatra elaborates the zero waste project
Ahmedabad, 18 April 2012
Every day 600 gram per head waste is generated in Ahmedabad. For Ahemdabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) it’s already a tough job to clear such a massive amount of wastage.
But looking at the growth of the city, in future there will be a time when traditional methods of disposal of waste will not be able to deal with the amount of waste generated.
Anticipating the future challenges, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has given commitment to UNCRD(United Nations Center for Regional Development) to implement the ‘zero waste strategy’ by year 2031 in city.
The Director of UNCRD was in Ahmedabad today to discuss the zero waste strategy road map for the city of Ahmedabad with various stake holders including the Mayor of Ahmedabad and Principal Secretary of Urban development department, Gujarat.
“Few months back, Ahmedabad signed MoU with UNCRD on zero waste strategy, and last month the standing committee meeting approved the proposal for implementation of the MoU by year 2031. In this regard, UNCRD today carried out multi-level stake holder consultation in Ahmedabad,” Shri Guruprasad Mohapatra, Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad said.
Shri Mohapatra further said that the UNCRD would come out with a basic report this year, and later final report in another six months or so.
“Zero waste doesn’t mean that waste generation will be zero. It is not possible. The city witnesses generation of 600 gram waste per head per day. Of this, 30-40% can be recycled or reused. Then some waste can be avoided by maximum use of natural resources. Reduce, Recycle and Reuse – three ‘R’ are the main elements of the zero waste strategy,” he added.
Shri Mohapatra said that in India, Ahmedabad is first city to commit zero waste strategy. He said that large cities of the world like Tokyo, Seoul etc are already working on implementation of zero waste strategy.
