On Prabhaben Taviad and her annual anti-Modi protests

The video shows Prabhaben’s aggressiveness during Modi’s programme in May 2011

By Rupang Bhatt, 2 May 2012

In February 2010 when Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi visited Dahod, the local MP of Congress smt Prabhaben Taviad was running in the market. The camera teams of media were on her front side, while police was running with the MP to catch her. Prabhaben wanted to disturb Modi’s Garib kalyan mela, but police had arrived at her place to detain her before she could go to disturb the government function. Prabhaben was finally caught and detained by police. She was released only after mela function concluded.

Few days later when Chief Minister had organized a meeting of the state MPs, Prabhaben reached there and started shouting why she was detained by police in Dahod. After some ruckus, Congress MPs walked out.

Let’s jump to May 2011. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was in Dahod to attend a public function. Prabhaben rushed to the stage and went close to Modi’s seat. With aggressive body language she was saying something to Modi. Modi was cleaning his face with napkin. He didn’t care to even notice Prabhaben. Some volunteers and police persons took Prabhaben away from the stage, but Prabhaben was constantly resisting. She was finally detained outside the venue.

Now come to May 2012.Prabhaben was preparing to reach Modi’s function with other Congress workers, but was detained. Prabhaben resisted. As per the Gujarat govt spokesperson she pulled the hair of a lady constable, snatched away a name plate on constable’s uniform, and protested her detention. This action according to Gujarat govt spokesperson invited reaction, and under compulsion, some injury took place.

So why does Prabhaben behave like this every time when the Chief Minister reaches her constituency area?

It is known that Gujarat Congress has started a visibility campaign since the last two-three years in the state. The campaign is aimed at showing presence of the party. One of the activities under this campaign is to protest against the Chief Minister at every possible place. If Modi’s programme is disturbed then they gain more publicity the next day in newspapers, and if Congress workers are detained before then can do so, then lesser publicity, but still some publicity. Such protests and subsequent publicity show presence of Congress party.

While other Congress MPs and MLAs face arrests and cooperate with police, Prabhaben is unique case. She would fight the battle with police persons and would not allow her detention.

Prabhaben is first-time MP. She is doctor having her clinic in Godhra. Her husband is veteran Congress leader who lost local election couple of years back.

The problem with Prabhaben is that she can not control herself when Modi is in her constituency. Modi, police and cameras excite her to the level that her aggression crosses all limits. This has been seen in TV visuals in February 2012, May 2011 and May 2012.

I guess Prabhaben should learn something from Anandiben.

Anandiben was invited yesterday to central government’s foundation stone laying function at Bharuch for new Narmada river bridge. Now imagine if Anandiben was Prabha Taviad, she could go near the central minister and shout out harsh words raising her hand opposite minister’s chest. But Anandiben is not Prabhaben. She behaved courteously throughout the function and said in her speech whatever she wanted to say, on behalf of the state government.

Other thing to mention here is that, in the past people have lost their lives while protesting against the government. Dahod MP has merely faced some bruises, which is unfortunate, but while Lalu and other MPs were aggressively speaking against the assault on the MP in Gujarat, did they show similar anger when a common poor lady Rajbala was assaulted and killed by Delhi govt? Rajbala neither could cry nor could complain because she died in coma.
