Ahmedabad, 12 May 2012

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated a grand building of Institute of Nursing Education and Research as part of the Rs.14-crore Nursing Training Complex being set up by Gujarat Government’s Health Department in the Civil Hospital premises in Ahmedabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Modi said that Gujarat was neglected in creating infrastructure and human resources in the field of health and medical education for the last 50 years but it is being corrected during the last 10 years.

As the event coincided with International Nursing Day, he said, it is not enough to build modern buildings but appoint quality human resource persons. In absence of farsightedness, the spread of medical education in India remained far behind in India. He suggested Ph.D. or doctorate level courses in nursing in the state. He said there has been a significant increase in the number of seats in medical colleges in the state, too.

Mr. Modi said there is need to accord the importance of nursing in the society as enshrined in Charak Samhita, as practiced by Mahatma Gandhi in nursing leprosy patients back to health. Nursing should not be treated merely as a profession, but as an expression of feelings and compassion. In 108, compassion is taught as equal importance along side treatment.

Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas said that Gujarat has increased seats in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in nursing, with a view to providing specialized manpower to the world.

Principal Secretary for Health Rajesh Kishore earlier delivered the welcome address. Prominent among those present on the occasion included Minister of State for Law Pradeepsinh Jadeja, Dr. Kirist Solanki, MP, MLAs, senior officers of civil hospital, doctors and astudents and NRHM Mission Director Ms Anju Sharma.
