Gas driven vehicles emit cancer causing nano carbon particles:CSIR head

Ahmedabad

The Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr. M O Garg today said that a study conducted by his organisation has clearly shown that the vehicles run on natural gases emit dangerous nano carbon particles which can cause cancer.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Global Green Nanotechnology Conclave in Ahmedabad today Dr. Garg said, ‘the study conducted in Delhi shows that the gas run buses and cars and other vehicles emit nano carbon particles. This free roaming invisible particles can easily get in to our body and cutting the inner membrane get in to the blood. These are carcinogenic. There must be a large amount of such particles in the atmosphere of Delhi and its a grave danger. We have already informed the government about it.’

In the presence of several experts including the renowned ISRO scientist Professor Y S Rajan and National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) CMD Dr. H Purushotham on the first day of the two day event, Dr. Garg said, ‘some times the invisible element is more dangerous than the visible one. The use of diesel which was put aside owning to visible emission of smoke seems much less dangerous than the non visible nano carbon particle emitting natural gas engines.

He also stressed on the need for more extensive study on the toxic effects of nano particles. ‘The Indian Toxicology Research Center Lucknow should help in this regard,’ Dr. Garg said.

He, however hailed the nano technology as a potential solution to most of our future problems.

On the occasion Dr. Purushotham said that India was number three in Nano technology research in the world. ‘Five hundred patents in the field have been filed by Indians.

Two years ago we were number 4 but now we are on the third place. We want the industry to support us in further strengthening our position.

Professor Rajan emphasised on the need for such researches which lead to usable products.
