Gujarat’s third largest dam, Kadana achieves 100% water storage capacity

Mahisagar: Gujarat’s third largest dam, Kadana, has achieved 100% of its water storage level achieved it full capacity on Friday. As of 12 noon today (Saturday), the dam, which has a full reservoir level of 127.71 meters, is 100% full.

As of 12 noon on Friday, the dam was 99.84% full with a storage of 1,247.24 MCM against the design gross storage of 1,249.30 MCM. Till 2 PM, the dam remained at the same level with an inflow of over 10,000 cusecs of water. However, at 3 PM on Friday (20-09), the dam achieved 100% storage.

It is noteworthy that during the peak monsoon season, Kadana was filling relatively slowly. According to available data, two months ago, on July 21st, Kadana was only 26% full. After one month, on August 21st, the water level in the dam had reached 48.91%, but soon, due to the rain in upstream areas of the dam, it crossed 60% water storage on August 26th.

Kadana Dam is an earthen and masonry structure located on the Mahi River in Mahisagar district. Built between 1979 and 1989, the dam features a pumped-storage hydroelectric power station. The initial two generators were brought online in 1990, followed by another two in 1998. The first two generators, known as Stage I, utilize reversible Kaplan turbines, enabling the power station to produce electricity during peak demand and pump water back into the reservoir during off-peak hours, such as at night.
