Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is set to launch a major project to widen and deepen the Vishwamitri River, a crucial step in mitigating future flood risks. The project will encompass a 25-kilometer stretch of the riverbed, increasing its depth to 10 feet. A key aspect of this initiative involves the relocation of aquatic wildlife, including crocodiles and turtles protected under Schedule 1 of wildlife laws.

The relocation effort has received the green light from the central government, paving the way for its commencement. The first phase will focus on moving 50 crocodiles and 100 turtles. Dr. Jaypalsinh, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, confirmed the approval in a telephonic interview. The relocated animals will be either released into suitable wild habitats or transferred to the Kamatibaug Zoo and the Ajwa Zoo, depending on capacity.
