Surat’s Kailash Dham Crematorium Builds 120-Foot RCC Chimney to Curb Pollution
May 04, 2026
Surat: In a significant step towards environmental conservation and urban innovation, the Kailash Dham Crematorium in Kholwad, Kamrej taluka, has constructed a 120-foot-tall RCC chimney designed to minimise local pollution.
The facility is being described as the first of its kind in the country to feature a 120-foot chimney at a crematorium aimed at dispersing emissions more effectively.
Managed by the Shri Sitaram Seva Trust, the crematorium has been upgraded in line with Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) guidelines. Built at an estimated cost of ₹52 lakh, the chimney uses advanced technology to release smoke at a higher altitude, significantly reducing odour and air pollution in nearby residential areas.
The chimney is also notable for being among the first in India to use a Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) structure for this purpose. Key features include:
- Height: 120 feet
- Diameter: 6 feet
- Power: Equipped with a 6-horsepower motor to ensure efficient vertical dispersion of smoke
Located on the banks of the Tapi River, the Kailash Dham Crematorium is one of the busiest facilities in the region, second only to Surat’s primary crematoriums. For the past decade, the trust has been operating gas-based cremation systems and conducts around 20 cremations daily, free of charge.
Sameer Rajendra Modi, President of the Shri Sitaram Seva Trust, said the new infrastructure will provide significant relief to residents of Kamrej, Palsana, Sarthana, and over 40 nearby villages. The facility is expected to become fully operational within the next 10 days. DeshGujarat
