IPL 2026 GT vs RR Qualifier 2: Can Gujarat’s Bowling Attack Outgun Rajasthan’s Explosive Batting?

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals will battle for a place in the IPL 2026 final when they face off in Qualifier 2 at New Chandigarh on Friday. The winner will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the title clash.

Despite sharing several similarities, the two teams have adopted contrasting approaches this season. Both sides have relied heavily on their top-order batters, possess relatively vulnerable middle orders and boast quality pace attacks with the new ball. However, their batting philosophies have been markedly different.

Gujarat’s campaign has been built around the consistency of captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The opening pair has favoured a measured, low-risk approach, focusing on building strong foundations rather than launching all-out attacks. Although among the most productive opening combinations in the tournament, GT’s powerplay scoring rate has remained in the lower half of the league. Their formula has largely been to post competitive totals and back their bowling attack to defend them.

Rajasthan Royals, in contrast, have embraced an aggressive brand of cricket led by teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old has emerged as one of the tournament’s most destructive batters, helping RR record the highest powerplay scoring rate this season. Even with Yashasvi Jaiswal not consistently at his best, Rajasthan’s fearless batting approach has enabled them to pile up imposing totals.

The contrasting styles could prove decisive in the knockout clash. Gujarat’s bowling unit was unable to contain Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 after RCB posted a massive 254-run total. Rajasthan showcased similar firepower in the Eliminator, scoring 243 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. While GT possess a stronger bowling attack than SRH, stopping Sooryavanshi and Rajasthan’s explosive top order will be a major challenge.

The toss could also have a significant bearing on the outcome. Although chasing teams have generally enjoyed greater success this season, both playoff matches have been won by sides batting first. With the match set to be played on the same surface used for the Eliminator, the pitch is expected to be slower and more worn, while limited dew could make chasing more difficult later in the evening.

Gujarat may consider strengthening their spin attack by bringing in either Manav Suthar or R Sai Kishore for the used surface. Rajasthan, meanwhile, are likely to retain the same XI that secured victory in the Eliminator.

Among the key battles, the contest between pace spearheads Kagiso Rabada and Jofra Archer could play a crucial role. Rabada has claimed 26 wickets this season for GT, while Archer has taken 24 for RR. Both have consistently delivered breakthroughs and will be expected to contain the opposition’s dangerous top-order batters.

Venue history favours Rajasthan. The Royals have won all four matches they have played in New Chandigarh, while Gujarat have managed just one victory in three outings at the venue. However, knockout cricket often defies past records, setting up an intriguing clash between Gujarat’s calculated consistency and Rajasthan’s fearless aggression.

With a place in the IPL 2026 final at stake, Friday’s contest promises to be a high-pressure showdown between two teams chasing the same destination through very different routes. DeshGujarat
