Centre Waives Customs Duty on Cotton Imports Temporarily

New Delhi: The Central government has announced a temporary exemption on customs duty for cotton imports from June 1 to October 31, 2026, aiming to ensure adequate raw material availability for the textile sector while protecting the interests of cotton farmers.

According to an official statement, the duty waiver will be in effect during the cotton off-season and is intended to support the entire cotton value chain. The move is expected to help textile manufacturers, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), by easing raw material shortages and moderating input costs.

The government said the decision reflects a balanced approach that seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of India’s textile industry without adversely affecting domestic cotton growers. The temporary exemption is also aimed at maintaining market stability and ensuring uninterrupted supply of cotton to the industry.

Officials said the measure will help sustain production, support exports and enhance the global competitiveness of Indian textiles during a period when domestic cotton availability is relatively limited. DeshGujarat
