Micro Blue Moon 2026: GUJCOST to Host Public Viewing at Tropic of Cancer Science Park

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) will organise a special public observation programme on Sunday, May 31, to mark the occurrence of the rare Micro Blue Moon, an astronomical event that will not be visible again until 2053.

The event will be held at the Tropic of Cancer Science Park from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, where visitors will get an opportunity to observe the celestial phenomenon through telescopes, interact with experts, learn about astrophotography, and participate in skywatching activities.

According to a social media post by Dr Narottam Sahoo, Scientist and Science Educator and Advisor at the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST), the Micro Blue Moon is a rare combination of two astronomical events. It will be the smallest full moon of the year, known as a “Micro Moon”, while also being the second full moon to occur in a single calendar month, making it a “Blue Moon”.

Dr Sahoo noted that the unique combination of a Micro Moon and a Blue Moon is exceptionally rare and will not occur again until 2053. He added that no binoculars or special equipment are required to witness the event, as it will be visible to the naked eye under clear sky conditions.

Apart from the main programme at the Tropic of Cancer Science Park, members of the public can also visit their nearest regional or district community science centres to observe the phenomenon.

The event is open to all and aims to encourage public interest in astronomy and space science. Organisers have invited citizens, students and science enthusiasts to participate in the observation programme and experience what they describe as a once-in-a-generation celestial spectacle.

The programme is being organised by GUJCOST under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat. DeshGujarat
