Ahmedabad Police Crack Down on Illegal Bangladeshi Migrants; Over 300 Detained

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Police and Crime Branch on Wednesday carried out a large-scale overnight operation targeting suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in several parts of the city, including Naroda, Dani Limda, Vatva, Vatva GIDC, Chandola, Gulabnagar and Khodiyarnagar.

The operation forms part of a statewide drive launched by the Gujarat Home Department against foreign nationals allegedly residing illegally in the state.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sharad Singhal said, “Operation Delta Hunt has been launched across Gujarat. The operation is also being carried out in Ahmedabad under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police. More than 30 teams, including personnel from the Crime Branch, Cyber Cell, SOG and local police units, were formed. These teams were deployed in areas such as Naroda, Dani Limda, Vatva, Vatva GIDC, Juhapura and other localities.”

“We had information that some of the people who had escaped during the operation conducted at Chandola Lake last year had returned and were living in and around Ahmedabad. Based on human and technical intelligence, more than 300 suspicious men, women and children were rounded up. Of them, 166 individuals have so far been identified as Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally and were residing here unlawfully. More than 150 others are still being questioned. Among the 166 individuals, many had obtained Indian Aadhaar cards through fraudulent means. Investigations are underway to determine through whom these documents were procured,” he added.

Reacting to the development, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said similar operations were conducted in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara with the involvement of local police, Crime Branch units, Special Operations Groups (SOG) and other agencies.

He said extensive searches and verification drives were carried out across multiple locations, resulting in the detention of a large number of suspected Bangladeshi nationals. Sanghavi added that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal infiltration and that such enforcement drives will continue in the future. DeshGujarat
