Indira Bridge in Ahmedabad to Become 12-Lane Cable-Stayed Bridge

Ahmedabad: In a major infrastructure push aimed at improving connectivity between Ahmedabad and the state capital, Gandhinagar, the Gujarat government has approved the expansion and modernisation of the 43-year-old Indira Bridge on the Ahmedabad Airport-Koba-Gandhinagar corridor. The existing six-lane bridge over the Sabarmati River will be upgraded into a 12-lane corridor with the construction of two new three-lane cable-stayed bridges on either side.

The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department has floated a tender worth Rs 96.23 crore for the project, while the total cost is estimated to be around Rs 109 crore. The project includes widening and modernising the existing Indira Bridge, which serves as a key link between Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

According to R&B Department officials, the Indira Bridge, built in 1983, is now more than four decades old, and the state government has approved its renovation along with the construction of two modern cable-stayed bridges, each carrying three lanes, on the left and right sides of the existing structure. Once completed, the corridor will have a total of 12 lanes, significantly increasing its traffic-handling capacity.

The new bridges will also feature wider pedestrian footpaths and dedicated viewing galleries overlooking the Sabarmati River. While the existing bridge has a footpath of about one metre in width, the new structures will have footpaths of around 2.5 metres, providing more space and a better experience for pedestrians.

Officials said the design of the new cable-stayed bridges has already been finalised, and the tendering process is underway. The project is targeted for completion within one year. The bridges will incorporate modern cable-stayed technology similar to the Apollo Circle bridge in Ahmedabad, while featuring a distinct design inspired by the Sudarshan Setu in Dwarka.

Once completed, the upgraded Indira Bridge is expected to improve traffic flow between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, reduce congestion on the airport route, and provide faster connectivity between the state’s largest city and its capital. DeshGujarat
