Gujarat:Income tax department raids 13 doctors in Ahmedabad
By Neel Shah
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat on 22nd of August, 2008

About 200 Income tax sleuths searched 22 premises belonging to 13 well-known and apparently wealthy doctors in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The raids, which began early in the morning, were still in progress. Sources in the Income Tax Department said the raid could go on possibly for another two days.

Department carried out search at Cardiologist Dr. Keyur Parikh’s heart care clinic and resident, his associates Dr. Ajay Nair, Milan Chag, Shrinivas Malya, Hemang Bakshi’s clinics and residents, Hearts specialists Dr. Anil Jain and Vishal Gupta’s resident and hospital, Urologist and transplants surgeon Ketan Shukla and his wife Riddhi Shukla’s residence and their ‘Arogyam’ hospital, Orthopedic Dr. Mukesh Shah and Bharat Shah’s residents and ‘Alok accident and joint replacement hospital’ and Obesity specialist Dr. Mahendra Naravaria’s clinic and resident.

Officials conducted a search, seizure and survey operation and had seized Rs. 50 lakh in cash apart from some “significant documents” and papers of properties and financial transactions. Gold jewelery of a high value has also been seized. The authorities have identified more than 25 bank lockers which are now sealed. Nobody was allowed to go near the locations where the officials were conducting the search operations.

The police had arrived in full strength along with the Income Tax officials and helped the tax officials to get entry into the residence and clinics. The police officials told that they were only giving cordon facilities for the officials and they were not involved in any function connected to the raid.

  1. INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT DEFINETLY GIVE THEM GOOD TREATMENT AS PATIENT TO THIS DOCTOR.

  2. Raja says:

Sounds like the Govt is targetting doctors to cover up expenses incurred by themselves. Most of the doctors mentioned have international or nation service awards or seem to have done a lot for the country. Sounds like the Govt. (or the Gujrat Govt.) is up to no good. I’d suggest getting the doctors say in this….the fact that if you do a search almost all the doctors are recognized for aid in the state or the country (both edu and other) sounds like the govts. doing the wrong thing..and the wrong time. PS – 50 lakhs divided by 12 docs comes to 4lakhs a doc. Sounds like they found normal stuff or alot less than the hype seems to be…(again im not the IT guy so i wouldnt know)

  3. Maheshbhai says:

Though Raja’s writing has logic the reality is that most of the common people admired income tax raids on doctors. These doctors are like hungry of getting more and more money. They charge heftily from patients. They are not service oriented but have made a business out of medical science. Primary goal of medical science is service but it has sadly become a big business.

A poor person can not enter Sal or Sterling hospitals in Ahmedabad. These are too costly hospitals. In Sal hospital they have made public footpath a parking and in original plan where parking is shown there they have built laboratory and other facilities including dangerous kitchen in the basement.

Once upon a time we had VS and Civil hospital being created by philanthropists for charity and for public cause. But nowadays only money making factory like doctors and medical institutes are coming up and raids on them are justified.

    Well done income-tax department.

  4. Raja says:

Where did you get that information….you must be mistaken..the reason patients go there is because they’re mostly govt. people who have free medical connections through the govt. Remember comparing civil and vs is wrong since they are Govt. Hospitals. The others are private. Anyhow thats your opinion…I find it rather odd…In the first article it said expecter 20 cr. and now theyve gone down by 50%…. I think this was something they “speculated” without any evidence..PS- did you notice the above article and the ones in the paper are the same (In native languages, excl. english) – sounds like a press release from IT rather than real hard core anything else. If you dont believe me, translate the other lingual newspapers (gujrati, etc) and youll see the spelling mistakes above are the same too. By the way…you talk about dangerous kitchen..talk about lack of security at VS and civil that led to explosions (bomb blasts)….Well fair enough that you’re looking at just one side (personal opinion) but look at the overview…the latest headlines say that the govt dont have evidence reg. the terror attacks in gujarat..yet they have “130+ agents” in the field on the IT (incl. police)…where do you think they should really be (right now).

  5. Gujjubhai says:

Go to any place , they will not give any receipts for medical services

  6. Jay Patel says:

I see ” YamRaj ” in doctors who are wearing white apron but has so many black spots. Gone are the days when Drs were representing the God !!. Drs are sending you for the tests which are some time not needed only because they get commission from their crook Labs.

Why a common man is happy to see these kinds of Headlines ??.

It seems that IT info was already leaked otherwise much more would have been unearthed. This IT action is like a eyewash.

A’bad hospitals like SAL or Sterling are not for the ” Aam Aadmi “. These types of hospitals are built by NRI directly or indirectly and being served for Wealthy NRI which is not bad, it brings Health Tourism.

In Rural Gujarat Ayurvedic graduate is practicing as a regular Dr and Lab technician is identified himself as a pathology Dr. Last year there was an agitation in this matter. The time is up to bring transparency in billings so these well educated Drs can be bring under IT net and by this way they can serve their country better.

  7. Facts says:

Well the IT has definitely given out press notes in pure frustration.

Usually an IT Raid is carried out only if they expect to find 1-2 crore Rs in cash.then only is it considered satisfactory and then only they can overcome the cost required to conduct such massive raids.

Too bad these doctors disappointed them.

In more than 4-5 doctors less than 50,000 rs were found in the residence which is the amount of cash most people usually keep on hand for house-hold expenses.

Moreover most of the facts given in the press notes are false. If you have ever been to heart care clinic you will definitely know that you are always given a receipt for any service provided even if it is of 100-200Rs.

About the doctors charging more…they work hard and according to their experience and expertise there is no reason why they shouldn’t charge.

People need to know that the money goes to hospitals and then the hospitals pay the doctors their fees.

Atleast this is what is the case in SAL,Sterling,VS and civil.

If patients want first hand care they go to private hospitals and if they want to go for more economic option they go for government hospitals.

People blame doctors that they are going only after money. But it is not a crime to charge. If they want a cheaper option go to govt. hospitals.

Ultimately there will always be a difference between a Maruti 800 and Honda Civic. You cant expect all cars to be of same price because the bottom line is that there is a difference!!!

  8. Common Man says:

Dear all doctors of this generation across the world,

After reading newspaper reports that doctors make millions via commission in putting stent in hearts I have some questions

    “Yeh stent stent kyaa hai?”
    “Yeh stent stent??”

    “Yeh commission commission kyaa hai”
    “Yeh commission commission??”

    Also another question.

Medical science is for healing or money making?
Fine that doctors are making money but should there be a limit or not?
Money making doctors have made medical treatment costlier
Docrots want Maruti and then Honda and then BMW and for your greedy mind you only treat rich people in five star hospitals.
Stent is a small ballpen spring size object but because of your commission making practice it is prized at more than lakh Rs. thats what I read in newspapers.

    Thank You income tax department.

  9. NIKHIL KARIYA says:

  12. Vikas says:

    Dear Income Tax Department,

I pay annually around 10 Lacs as Income tax. After paying heavy tax, I expect atleast reasonable (Not talking about free services – happy to pay for basic services even) services from doctors.

In last 2 -3 years, I have moved to many doctors for general and regular treatments. No where i feel like that Doctors are taking responsibility. When we talk about hospitals are collecting fees and then paying doctors .. what a joke. I worked for WHO few years.

Few things are very important – no comment on Doctor’s charges as it’s their decission to decide and our decission to go.
BUT – Are doctors accountable? If you can not get appropriate services, what’s the way to deal with it? If any law is answer that comes in mind – than think practical applicability – how many people have approached – than you will find answer in %
2nd : For all doctors, laboratory and to certain extend pharmasists, – Billing should be in White.

If doctors have done many things for India or some other country or for whoever – why they feel shy in giving white receipts ?
