The Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced today that the state government had undertaken a most modern and visionary health care services Project for Renovation and Restructuring Reformation of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital at the cost of Rs. 911.68 Crores. This will be Gujarat government’s initiative in bringing qualitative changes in the social health infrastructure of Ahmedabad civil Hospital which will go a long way in strengthening Health-Care Social infrastructure Sectors.

The Project would be concluded in three phases ending Gujarat Golden Jubilee year-2010, he said addressing media persons at his bungalow in Gandhinagar.

The Chief Minister said that Gujarat has witnessed rapid and sustained growth, with NO-1 position in Development. With most advance infrastructure facilities, Gujarat is placed on the pinnacle of Industrial Development and Investments. Gujarat has made revolution by achieving 12% Agriculture Growth rate. “With tremendous public participation, Gujarat has successfully fostered the development as a mass movement. The Development Edifice is resting on the five pillars; Panchmrut Shakties.” he said.

Now, Gujarat has aimed for impeccable record in Human Development Index and social infrastructure services. With public participation, various innovative initiatives have been implemented, to bring qualitative changes in the healthcare and its delivery mechanism. Inspired by the success, we have undertaken the most ambitious project of transforming the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, he added.

Chief Minister revealed that the present bed capacity of the Hospital is of 2150 beds, which would be increased by 2800 more beds. over and above 200 beds will be added on an autonomous basis. Thus, Total bed capacity will be 5150 beds which transform this Civil Hospital into Asia’s biggest modern health care complex. The new construction includes ultra modern infrastructure facilities-cutting edge technologies, modern O.P.D, and slew of measures to upgrade and make quality changes in healthcare.

Under the transformation process, the new hospital will have one additional Trauma Centre and Multi Speciality and Super Specialty Healthcare and Medical education.

The transformation will take place in the phased manner, the three phase modernisation to incur the total expenditure of Rs. 911.68 Crores.

The holistic planning includes transformation of all the blocks- B.J.Medical College, Dental College and Hospital, Paraplegia College, Operation Theaters, Laboratory Blocks, P.G.Hospitals, New Trauma Centre, Sub-Centre, Ophthalmic Institutes, and other basic and infrastructures like Road, Drainages, electrification, Nursing School-College to entail expenditure of Rs.289.05 Crores. Second Phase of the facelift would undertake U.G.Hostels, P.G.Hostels, P.G.Married Students Apartments-12 Blocks, Professor Apartments, Guesthouse, Mess and Convenience Shop, 3 New Dean Bungalows, 7 new housing Blocks for the Class-1 -2 -servants, 9 new blocks for the Class-3 servants. The second phase would incur an expenditure of Rs. 235 Crores. The third phase will take care of day to day needs of the patients, New Civil Hospital Complex, Parking, and other important infrastructure works, that would cost Rs.325 Crores. Under the reformation and modernisation process, numbers of measures are to be implemented, which includes important changes in health care, the Medical Education Colleges and Hostels, residences, and Advance and Modern Buildings for meeting different Needs and improve the services. All Old buildings and constructions are to be removed. Special Bus service will run for Machine-Transportation. For Smooth Movement of Pedestrians, safe walk-way and foot-path will be constructed. Separate entry for Emergency vehicles along with separate parking facilities too will be developed. Over and above the beatification, Electricity Supply, Water Supply, Drainage is also to be upgraded. Intensive plantation of tree saplings and new gardens are on anvil. Beyond the Fire Fighting facilities and other emergency services, Special Systems would be developed for Solid waste and medical waste disposal.

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital today

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital was built in Asarava area in the year 1952, spread in 110 acres. It has a bed capacity of 2000, and 44 wards, 30 odd departments, 16 operation theaters. Every year, more that 6.5 lakh patients take advantage of health services in this hospital. Laboratory, Blood-Bank and Trauma centre are functioning. Medical College and Hostels will be given new shape. The Civil Hospital is surrounded by various other hospitals, like U.N.Mehta Cardiology and Research Centre, Cancer Hospital, Eye Hospital and the T.B.Hospital.

The main Civil Hospital has 9 Blocks and 43 Wards. Every ward has capacity of 50 beds. There 16 odd Operation Theaters. Advance Blood-Bank, Trauma Centre with Emergency care facilities is rendering services to the patients. Originally, it was designed for 26 patients per ward, if we take a look, it is already over crowded. State Government remains fully committed to provide health and medical services according to N.A.B.H and N.A.B.L norms and Standards at all the hospitals run by State Government. Process has been already started that the norms and standards are observed by all the hospitals.
