Four aerobridges at Ahmedabad airport soon
By our correspondent
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 18 June, 2009

A domestic terminal of Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport will soon have four aerobridges attached to it. The work on installing the aerobridges has already started and will be completed within a month.

Passengers will not have to rely on buses to commute between the terminal and the aircraft, once the aerobridges start functioning. Tunnel like aerobridges will be attached to the first floor of the domestic terminal building. It would be possible to stretch them up to the standing aircraft.

Aerobridges are already in operation in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai airports in India.

    EXCELLENT THING THEY ARE DOING…….

… GOVT. HAVE TO START ALL ASIAN COUNTRY DIRECT FLIGHT FROM AHMEDABAD TO ALL WORLD MAIN CITY.

    — STARTING BUS SERVICE FROM AHMEDABAD AIRPORT TO ALL AREA AHMEDABAD.

—GIVE RAILWAY CONNECTIVITY TO AHMEDABAD AIRPORT.

Why do we hear only announcements and no completions.
Building of these aero-bridges is no big deal, but not having them so far, in spite of such a prosperous state and a free-enterprise Hindutva Government brings a lot of shame to us.
Get done with it, and fix our sanitation problems and pollution-mess first!

Why are these developments portrayed only on paper and in speeches?
Why don’t you let the ground situation speak for themselves? it will be much louder and truthful.
, whenever I visit Sardar Patel AIrport to pickup my relatives, the place is so dirt-filled ane badhej dhuD dhuD dekhaay.
    kem garden nathi banaavtaa?
Handover such projects to Swaminaaraayan/Jain Sampraday, it will be built creatively better than any measures out there, and of course they will come with a load of accountability, because their ultimate aim is Akshardham/moksha.
Already their sampradaay activities are heavily leveraged by the U.S.A./U.K./Canada governments.
Bhaaratmaa needs their service to build world-class infrastructure access-points.

This is a good news especially for those traveling with children, elderly people and disabled. Now their entry and exit to aircraft would be easy. Also, it would be very convenient for other regular passengers. Aerobridges would help in smooth entry and exit to and from the aircraft respectively. Also, it would avoid the need for the buses and passengers won’t have to get down the stairs from the aircraft or climb up the stairs while entering the aircraft.

Whenever I have flown to Ahmedabad in an international flight from US, I have used those stairs either climbing up or getting down from the aircraft. It is difficult especially when you have a carry on luggage and you are climbing up the stairs. Also, once there was a heavy rain and we were exposed in the rain completely open and while we were climbing stairs, we were almost wet. This aerobridges would prevent exposure to unfriendly weather.

One thing I want to point out here is that the Airport Authority of India must keep in mind that in coming days, passenger traffic will continue to increase at all the airports in India including Ahmedabad. The airport expansion project or building of new airports must be planned systematically keeping in mind the future needs so they can handle the passenger and air traffic smoothly and won’t be overburdened.

I have some recommendations for Ahmedabad Airport and this can apply to any underdeveloped airport in the world.

    1. Decrease the rate of parking fees and make it more affordable

    2. Make the parking lot bigger so people don’t park near the entrance where passengers enter the airport building

    3. Develop a special passenger drop-off area so vehicles carrying passengers can drop them off in that area. Passengers can unload their luggage from their vehicles and then vehicles either can go out of airport directly or can go to the parking lot.

    4. Make a lounge for the passengers and their relatives so they don’t have to stand outside while waiting to enter the airport building.

    5. Please try to increase the number of trolleys so there is no shortage for passengers. If needed, minimal amount of money like Rs 2/- can be charged for one trolley.

    6. Please make sure to keep the agents off the airport compound so they don’t blackmail passengers and their relatives by bringing trolleys. Have few authorized personnel to help passengers with their luggage and their trolleys. They will be given tips by passengers anyways.

    7. Please have wheelchairs available to the disabled and elderly while they are waiting for luggage check in. Special area can be developed for passengers traveling with small children and pregnant females.

    8. All the basic facilities should be clean and easily accessible like water fountain and toilets.

    9. Food available at the airport should be affordable and passengers should not be allowed to be looted by these people.

    10. Paid phones should be available so passengers can call their relatives waiting in the lounge. Cellphone charger kiosks should be made also.

    11. Check in procedure must be made as smooth as possible so to avoid congestion and chaos.

    12. Security must be increased outside and inside airport. Right now, we don’t have to take our shoes off while passing through security. Anyone can put something inside their shoes and sneak in. We heard few days back about an American coming with Arms and Ammunitions from US to Delhi and Chennai airport where finally he was caught. There must be no compromise on security of passengers and staff.

    13. Airport staff and airline staff should be more courteous, polite and helpful to the passengers. They should be very well trained to deal even with the nastiest passengers. Usually, it is difficult to find someone who can answer questions in case if luggage is lost while arriving or if flight is late while departing. Overall, the service by the staff is extremely poor at Ahmedabad airport.

    14. Extra immigration counters should be installed and immigration procedure should be made smooth so the passengers who are coming after such a long tiring flights can quickly reach their home.

    15. More conveyor belts should be installed so even if there are 3-4 flights coming at the same time, there won’t be chaos. Trolleys going outside with passengers must be brought in at regular intervals so passengers don’t have to run around to find trolleys to take their luggage out. Last time when I went to India, I was asked by an unauthorized person to pay Rs. 150/- and he would bring me a trolley from outside. This must be avoided.

    16. Proper parking lot should be developed for people who come to pick up their relatives from airport so they don’t park haphazardly.

and the list goes on and on…..there are so many things which can be done apart from developing infrastructure. I haven’t even written about the removal of slums from the vicinity of airport, installment of advanced fog instrument landing system, aviation safety from bird strikes, tightening of runway security, development of an alternative runway, provision of railway and bus transport to the airport etc. etc.

The major take home point is that even if you develop infrastrcture completely, it will be of no use if the passengers using the facilities are not disciplined or the staff providing the service has bad attitude. Both need to be changed. Passengers should not behave arrogantly just because they paid for air tickets. Similarly, staff must behave in an appropriate manner, without harassing passengers and must be as helpful as possible rather than showing passengers an attitude. Relatives who come to pick up or drop their family members at the airport should also understand that they should try to minimize the number of people coming to the airport. Last time when I went to Ahmedabad, I saw one person who was going abroad and two big buses full of people came to drop him at the airport and then there was a total chaos. Nothing to hurt their sentiments but we also need to understand that we should try minimize number of people going to the airport.

Sarvani Vikas (Complete Development) only occurs when people change their attitudes, improve their services, treat others respectfully and be nice to everyone. Building roads, airports, skyscrapers is just developing infrastructure. If the base of this infrastructure is weak (which is public who will use it, people who create it and providers who give services), development would not be called a complete development.

Suggestions and comments are most welcome.

    Thanks

    Jai Hind

GREAT…..GREAT….GREAT NEWS…….IN GUJARAT IDEAS AND PLANS BECOME REALITY IN MR. MODI’S LEADERSHIP. I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK TRYING TO CLIMB STAIRS TO AIRPLANE…..SLOWLY BUT SURELY V R GETTING THERE.

  8. Mahesh Patel says:

Guys don’t be fooled with this blue print. It’s not for the SVP airport. Airport Authority of India has been cheating you. Since this news has been announced in early 2009, not a single bridge has started. The politicians in Delhi do not want SVP airport get more flights or better facilities. Because you are Gujarati, they jealous of you!!!

  9. Mr. Dave says:

Agree with Mahesh’s comments above. I work very close with Airport Authority (as assistant executive of one of politicians/ministers). I have heard him saying so often that SVP Airport has least priority than any other airports and do not have any interest whether work get finished on time or not. Since I am Gujarati, he put me away from this project. His anti-Guajarati team leading this project and all the members of the team are not in favor or want to put road-blocks against the improvement of SVP airport…
