Gujarat ranks third in population of donkeys, buffaloes in India

The state of Gujarat enjoys 10 percent population of donkeys and ranks third in this regard in India. The state also ranks third in population of buffaloes, seventh in seeps and goats, fourteenth in pigs, and tenth in horse population. The state ranks only second to Rajasthan in population of Camels with over 8 percent share nationwide.

According to figures available in a recently published report by Animal Husbandry department of Gujarat, 61.39% of total milk produced in Gujarat is buffalo milk, 23.38% is milked from original breed, and 12.10% from mix-breed variety. This means Gujarat consumes buffalo milk majorly.

The state has 475 private and 7 government run Gau-shalas and it ranks 2nd and 9th in this regard.

Gujarat stands poor in terms of figure of veterinary hospitals and polyclinics with 22nd ranking. Gujarat has only 14 such set ups compare to 9578 countrywide.

According to official figures published in a report, total 23,000 buffalo were slaughtered in year 2007-08 in Gujarat. Also slaughtered were 74000 sheep, 132000 goats, 2000 pigs, 12105000 hens. There are only 38 registered slaughter houses in Gujarat. But unregistered are possibly in thousands. The report shows not a single cattle was slaughtered in the state in year 2007-08. It should be mentioned here that bovine slaughter is banned in Gujarat.
