Once in eight day water supply in Dahod, that too for an hour
Dahod, DeshGujarat, 20 July 2010

Residents of east Gujarat’s Dahod district headquarter Dahod town get water supply once in eight days due to shortage of water in reservoir responsible to supply water. Even this once in eight day supply comes for only an hour and that too in low pressure style.

There is now minute amount of water available in Patadungari reservoir that supplies water to Dahod town.

Hand pumps, wells, rivers and village tanks are dried as there was not sufficient rain experienced last year.

The monsoon that was declared officially on 15th June has so far brought only 17.12% rainfall till 29th of July this year. Dahod taluka has observed 24.94% rain fall of season.

The Congress Member of Parliament from Dahod, Dr Prabha Taviyad, has accused the state government’s irrigation department of being apathetic to the water scarcity problem despite being aware of the same. She held a dharna in front of District Collector Lochan Shehara’s office today and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

She said: “About 65 per cent of the hand pumps in the district do not work. There are only six boring machines for the seven talukas in the district. Even if they have planned 1,800 to 2,500 hand pumps for which boring machines will be used towards May-end, the work will remain incomplete.”

She added: “Each boring machine can only dig up to three wells in a day. If the issue is not addressed now, then by May-end there will be a severe drought like scenario.”

She said the lack of water has forced several villagers to migrate, which is an unhealthy trend

Very Sad. What is government’s response to this problem. This is more basic problem than the 108 service and needs attention right away.
