Every year Gujarat’s urban population grows by 0.52% on average. In last one decade(2001-11) total urban population growth has been 5.2% according to latest figures of census 2011.

Gujarat’s 42.6% people live in urban areas while 57.4% people live in rural areas. Ten years back in 2001 62.6% people were living in villages.

Gujarat’s 8 major cities cover 24.38% population of state. Mega City Ahmedabad’s latest population is 55,70,585 up from 45 lakh ten years back.

Capital Gandhinagar’s newly marked Municipal Corporation limit contains 2,92,752 people.

Gujarat’s Surat district noticed highest growth in population in last ten years(42.19%) followed by Kutch district with growth in population as high as 32.03% and Dahod(29.95%). In entire state there are only two districts – Kutch and Dahod where population growth has been noticed higher than before.
