Gujarat assembly passes a bill to set up an Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Management (IITRM)

Gujarat assembly today passed a bill to make a way for formation of an autonomous Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Management (IITRM) with powers of a University.
The new institute is aimed at satisfying an increasing demand for engineers in the area of infrastructure development.
The capital support to this proposed varsity shall be given by the government. It would charge normal fee from the students to meet its recurring expenditures from the fee structure, and gain financial autonomy.
The bill involves an estimated expenditure of Rs 18 crore in FY 2011-12 and a sum of Rs 67 crore in FY 2012-13, of which Rs 47 crore will be capital expenditure.
Once fully functional, the institute will accommodate 2,000 students. Of them 50% will be in under graduate courses, while others will be Phd and post graduate students.
An 11-member board of governors will look after the institute. The Chairman of the institute will be appointed by the state government, while day-to-day work will be looked by a Director. One of the member in board will be an industrialist.
The institute would be built over a 20,000 square meter land of Rohit textile mill, acquired by the AMC.
Residential quarters for the staff and a hostel for students will be built over 20 acre land of Sarangpur cotton mill which is located 1.5 km away from Rohit mill land.
The government will help the institute in first eight years period.
Gujarat Congress opposed the bill.
