Election programme for four Rajya Sabha seats of Gujarat declared

Ahmedabad, 3 March, 2012

The state of Gujarat will witness Rajya Sabha poll for four seats in March. Last day of filing nominations is 19th of March. The election will take place on 30th of March.

Four Rajya Sabha members retiring from Gujarat are Shri Arun Jaitley, Shri Kanjibhai Patel, Shri Pravinchandra Rashtrapal and Shri Vijakumar Rupani.

While Jaitley, Patel and Rupani are from BJP, Rashtrapal is from Congress.

Jaitley’s renomination is believed certain as he is leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha.

Political circles believe that Kanjibhai will not be renominated.

Names in discussion for replacement of Rashtrapal are Yogendra Makwana, Madhusudan Mistry, Shankersinh Vaghela. Circles close to Shankersinh Vaghela says, bapu doesn’t want to go to Rajya Sabha because he is interested in Gujarat politics in the wake of 2012 general assembly poll. But there are possibility that ultimately he emerge as a candidate.

The term of office of 58 members of the Rajya Sabha elected from 15 States is due to expire on their retirement in April, 2012 as detailed below :-
