Gujarat Seafood Exports Touch ₹6,000 Crore, Veraval Emerges as Key Hub

Veraval: Gujarat has strengthened its position in the seafood sector, with exports from the state reaching around ₹6,000 crore, largely driven by Veraval, a key hub of the fishing industry.

According to Seafood Exporters Association of India (Gujarat Region) Secretary Naresh Gohel, India’s total seafood exports for the financial year 2025–26 touched a record ₹72,315 crore, amounting to about 19.32 lakh metric tonnes. This marks a steady rise over the past three years, from ₹60,500 crore in 2023–24.

Despite concerns over geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, the export figures remained unaffected as the data covers the period up to March.

Gujarat’s seafood is mainly exported to Europe and China, where demand is high for species such as ribbon fish, cuttlefish, and squid. Countries like Thailand and Vietnam also import large quantities of Indian mackerel.

Veraval plays a central role in this trade, with over 100 export units operating in the region. Seafood containers, typically weighing 25–27 tonnes, are transported from Veraval to ports such as Mundra, Pipavav, and Kandla at a cost of ₹22,000 to ₹25,000 per container. International shipping costs range between $2,000 and $5,000.

The industry also generates significant employment, supporting fishermen, boat crews, ice factories, transport operators, and packaging units.

To further boost exports, the government and industry bodies are promoting shrimp farming in rural areas where traditional agriculture is not viable. The initiative is expected to increase production and create additional employment opportunities. DeshGujarat
