Jaipur Plans to Replicate Surat’s Smart Traffic Management System
May 08, 2026
Surat: Surat’s Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), developed jointly by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Surat Police, is emerging as a model for other cities, with a high-level delegation from Jaipur visiting the city to study its implementation.
The delegation, comprising Jaipur’s Development Commissioner, District Collector and six senior police officials, visited Surat to understand the advanced technology being used for traffic management and explore the possibility of implementing a similar system in Rajasthan’s capital.
Officials were briefed about the modern Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) set up on Bhatar Road to streamline traffic operations in Surat. The system uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at major junctions to scan vehicle number plates. If a traffic violation is detected, an e-challan is automatically generated through the system.
Authorities said the technology has reduced human intervention, improved transparency and enabled real-time traffic monitoring from the control room. Traffic signal timings can also be adjusted remotely to clear congestion in busy areas.
The Jaipur delegation was particularly impressed by Surat’s ‘Green Corridor’ system, under which traffic signals automatically turn green along designated routes for ambulances carrying critical patients or organs for donation, helping save crucial time.
During the visit, Assistant Municipal Commissioner D.D. Patel, In-charge IT Director Jigar Patel and Executive Engineer Tejas Patel gave a technical presentation on the use of data analytics and smart technologies in traffic management. The delegation later visited the Surat Police Commissioner’s office at Athawalines, where Traffic Circle Police Inspector D.R. Gohil explained the use of CCTV surveillance in maintaining law and order.
At the end of the visit, Jaipur Development Commissioner said Surat’s model serves as an example not only for Gujarat but for metro cities across the country. He also expressed interest in implementing a similar ANPR-based traffic monitoring system in Jaipur. DeshGujarat
