India’s First Mini/Micro-LED Display Fab Unit to Be Set Up in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Gujarat is rapidly emerging as a major semiconductor manufacturing hub in the country, with the Union Cabinet recently approving two new semiconductor projects worth Rs. 3,936 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Of the two projects, Crystal Matrix Limited will invest Rs. 3,068 crore in the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), while Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) will invest Rs. 868 crore in Surat. Minister of Science and Technology Arjun Modhwadia said the projects would mark another milestone in Gujarat’s industrial development.

The minister said Gujarat had already announced a dedicated semiconductor policy, helping attract four major projects worth nearly Rs. 1.24 lakh crore to the state. With the addition of the two newly approved projects, Gujarat has further strengthened its position in India’s semiconductor ecosystem. He added that the Gujarat State Electronics Mission (GSEM) is functioning as a single-window facilitator to simplify administrative procedures and support investors.

Welcoming the Centre’s approval, Modhwadia said Gujarat was the first state in the country to introduce a semiconductor policy. As a result, six of the 12 semiconductor projects approved under the India Semiconductor Mission have come to Gujarat, making the state a leader in the sector.

He said the two new projects are expected to generate over 2,230 high-tech jobs besides creating thousands of indirect employment opportunities. The projects will also strengthen Gujarat’s semiconductor value chain, ranging from chip design to fabrication and packaging. GSEM, he added, is committed to ensuring the timely operationalisation of both projects by providing support related to land, water, electricity and other infrastructure facilities.

Providing details about the projects, the minister said Dholera SIR has now joined the ranks of the world’s advanced chip manufacturing centres. Crystal Matrix Limited will set up India’s first compound semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera with an investment of Rs. 3,068 crore.

He said the facility will manufacture Mini/Micro-LED displays based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, which are currently imported into India. The plant is expected to produce 72,000 square metres of display panels and 24,000 sets of RGB wafers annually. The displays manufactured in Dholera are expected to be used in smartphones, electric vehicle dashboards and high-end television screens.

Meanwhile, Surat, traditionally known for its diamond and textile industries, is also set to enter semiconductor manufacturing. Suchi Semicon Private Limited will establish an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in the city with an investment of Rs. 868 crore.

The minister said the Surat facility will manufacture over 103.03 crore chips annually, catering to the automobile and industrial automation sectors. DeshGujarat
