Western Railway Modernises 314-km Gujarat Rail Network with Advanced MPLS-Based Communication System

Rajkot: Marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of railway communication systems, Western Railway’s Rajkot Division has migrated its existing CCEO-based Train Traffic Communication System (TCCS) to an advanced MPLS-based Train Control Communication System in the Rajkot–Viramgam section on May 26, 2026.

The new system is expected to play a key role in making railway operations safer, faster, more reliable, and more efficient.

Under the project, approximately 314.5 km of railway track and 35 railway stations have been integrated. This includes the 182-km Rajkot–Viramgam section, the 98-km Wankaner–Navlakhi section, and the 34.5-km Surendranagar–Dhrangadhra section.

The upgraded communication system introduces several modern features aimed at improving operational efficiency and coordination:

HD-quality conference communication: High-definition voice conferencing between the Control Office and Station Masters (SMs) has been enabled through speakerphones and advanced gooseneck microphones.

Caller ID facility: A caller identification feature has been introduced for Assistant Train Controllers (ATNLs) and Station Masters, enhancing communication security and improving accuracy.

Touch-screen control console: User-friendly control console units equipped with touch-screen and push-button functionality have been installed to simplify and speed up operations for train controllers.

Direct communication between Station Masters: A new feature enables Station Masters at different stations to communicate directly without interrupting Train Controllers.

Rajkot Division officials said the MPLS network has now been stabilised and commissioned for service. The system will remain under intensive monitoring for the next month, after which additional communication services will be migrated to the network in a phased manner.

Divisional Railway Manager Giriraj Kumar Meena said the MPLS-based communication system marks a major step towards digital and modern railway operations. He said the system would make train control communication faster, more secure, seamless, and reliable, significantly improving operational efficiency.

He added that Rajkot Division would continue adopting modern technologies to deliver safer, smarter, and better railway services in the future. DeshGujarat.
