SC Grants Bail to Tathya Patel in Ahmedabad ISKCON Bridge Accident Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted regular bail to Tathya Patel, the accused in the July 2023 ISKCON Bridge accident case in Ahmedabad that claimed the lives of nine people.

Tathya’s lawyer has officially confirmed the development. Following the court’s order, Patel is set to be released on regular bail after spending nearly three years in jail in connection with the case. The apex court observed that while he has been booked under Section 304 of the IPC, he has not yet been convicted and the trial is still underway.

Earlier, in February, the Supreme Court had directed the trial court to examine around 25 witnesses by May, considering the gravity and sensitivity of the matter. Charges against Tathya were formally framed on November 18, 2025 — more than two years after the incident that occurred on July 19, 2023.

While considering the issue of compensation for the families of the deceased, the court observed that taking a decision at this stage could potentially prejudice the accused, as the trial is still pending.

Separately, Tathya Patel’s driving licence was permanently suspended by the Sabarmati RTO in Ahmedabad following recommendations from traffic police authorities. The lifetime cancellation effectively bars him from legally driving any vehicle in India in the future.

Notably, nine people were killed and 12 others injured after a Jaguar allegedly driven by Tathya Patel at a speed of 141 kmph rammed into people gathered near ISKCON Bridge in Ahmedabad late on the night of July 19, 2023. The incident triggered nationwide outrage and renewed debate over reckless driving and road safety. Tathya was also reportedly assaulted by a crowd at the accident site before being taken into custody. DeshGujarat
