BMW Convertible Crashes at ‘251 kmph’ on Mumbai-Vadodara Highway, Two Killed

Badlapur: A high-speed BMW convertible carrying three friends crashed on an under-construction stretch of the Mumbai-Vadodara Highway near Badlapur in the early hours of Sunday, leaving two people dead and one critically injured.

According to police, the luxury sports car was allegedly travelling at speeds of up to 251 kmph when it struck a divider and overturned multiple times around 2.30 am. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was reduced to a mangled wreck, while the occupants were thrown out of the open-top car.

The deceased have been identified as 26-year-old Yogesh Kishan Negi of Badlapur and 22-year-old Rebecca Babu Jacob of Bandra. The lone survivor, 24-year-old Angad Gill, also from Badlapur, is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Kalyan.

Investigators said the trio had gone out to celebrate Negi’s birthday and were returning home when the accident occurred near Eranjad in Badlapur. Preliminary findings suggest they had been driving around the highway for some time before the crash and were travelling from Panvel towards Titwala when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, a video that has surfaced on social media and is believed to have been recorded inside the car shortly before the crash appears to show the speedometer touching 251 kmph.

Police said the BMW hit a divider on a section of the Mumbai-Vadodara Highway that is still under construction before overturning several times. The open-roof design of the convertible is believed to have contributed to the severity of the injuries, as all three occupants were thrown out during the crash. Investigators said the bodies of the deceased were found hundreds of metres from the point of impact.

Authorities have not yet determined who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. The BMW is registered in the name of Gill’s father, a businessman based in Badlapur.

Senior Police Inspector Kishore Shinde of Badlapur West police station said speed and poor visibility may have played a role in the crash. The highway stretch where the accident occurred is not yet operational and lacks street lighting. Investigators suspect the driver may not have noticed the divider in time despite attempting to apply the brakes.

The incident has also raised questions about how the group gained access to the unopened section of the highway. Police have launched a detailed investigation into the crash and are examining the circumstances leading up to one of the most horrific road accidents reported in the region in recent times.
