FIR Against Two Doctors Over Wrong Blood Transfusion in Bhavnagar

Bhavnagar: More than four years after a woman died following childbirth at Bhavnagar’s Sir Takhtsinhji (Sir T) Hospital, Nilambaug police have registered an FIR against two women doctors and several unidentified persons on the directions of a special court.

According to the complaint, Geeta Solanki, a resident of Umarala village in Talaja taluka, was allegedly given B-negative blood even though her blood group was A-negative. The alleged mismatch reportedly caused a severe reaction that eventually led to her death.

The complaint was lodged by Geeta’s brother, Mukesh Miyatra, who stated that she had been receiving regular antenatal care at Gariyadhar Community Health Centre. He claimed that both her Mamta Card and referral records clearly mentioned her blood group as A-negative.

On April 28, 2022, Geeta was admitted to Sir T Hospital after going into labour, and delivered a baby girl later that night. Following excessive bleeding after delivery, she underwent surgery and was shifted to the intensive care unit.

The complainant alleged that hospital authorities later asked the family to arrange B-negative blood for transfusion. When relatives questioned why B-negative blood was required despite Geeta’s recorded blood group being A-negative, the doctor on duty allegedly informed them that B-negative blood had already been transfused. Geeta’s condition reportedly worsened thereafter, and she died on May 6, 2022.

The complaint also alleges that because the deceased belonged to a Scheduled Caste, false entries were deliberately made in her medical records and fabricated blood group documents were prepared to cover up the alleged negligence.

The family claimed they had earlier approached Nilambaug police, the Bhavnagar Superintendent of Police, and the district collector, but no action was taken. They subsequently approached the court seeking legal intervention.

Following directions from the 5th Additional Sessions Judge and Special Atrocity Court, Bhavnagar, through the SC-ST Cell, Nilambaug police have now registered the FIR.

The FIR has been filed under IPC Sections 167 (public servant preparing an incorrect document), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 34, 114, and Section 4(1) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Police said the investigation is underway and that they will examine medical records, documentary evidence, and witness statements to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged wrong blood transfusion and Geeta’s death. DeshGujarat
