Labrador Tops the List in AMC’s Pet Registration

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has seen a robust response to its ongoing online pet registration drive, recording 19,746 pet dogs and 189 pet cats across the city. Managed by the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD), the initiative aims to promote responsible pet ownership, rabies eradication, and structured animal management.

The campaign operates under mandates from the Supreme Court, the Animal Welfare Board of India, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960), the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules (2023), and the National Action Plan for Dog Mediated Rabies Elimination (NAPRE) 2030, reinforcing the city’s “Rabies Free Ahmedabad” mission.

Historic First: Mandatory Pet Cat Registration

In a pioneering move for municipal administration in India, the AMC introduced mandatory registration for pet cats from July 9 through September 30, 2026. Set at a fee of ₹200, the initiative aims to reach a target of 5,000 cats.

So far, 149 owners have registered 189 cats (72 indigenous and 117 pedigree breeds). The North West Zone led cat registrations with 44, closely followed by the West Zone with 43 and the South West Zone with 38.

Dog Registrations Reach 19,746

For pet dogs, the registration window runs from July 1 through September 30, 2026, with a fee of ₹2,000 (following earlier phased fee structures ranging from ₹200 to ₹1,000). Between January 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026, a total of 17,380 pet owners registered 19,746 dogs.

Digital System & Public Awareness Drive

Applicants must upload standard documentation, including identity proof, residential address proof, photos of the owner and pet, living premises photos, a registration/rental agreement if applicable, and a valid vaccination card issued by a registered veterinarian.

To maximize reach, the CNCD executed an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign. Promotion involved newspaper notices, broadcasts across 126 Smart City and Riverfront LED displays, social media campaigns, radio broadcasts, and direct outreach at public gardens, flower shows, schools, and colleges. Informational posters featuring QR codes were also placed across local pet clinics and 22 pet shops. Additionally, an online pet parenting webinar hosted by the AMC drew participation from over 25 pet owners. DeshGujarat
