AMC Unveils Rs 142 Crore Stormwater Plan to Tackle Waterlogging in Bopal-Ghuma

Ahmedabad: Days after heavy rains left several residential societies in the Bopal-Ghuma area waterlogged, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced three stormwater drainage projects worth Rs 142 crore, aimed at providing a long-term solution to flooding in the area.

The projects have been planned under the city’s stormwater drainage Master Plan following a hydrological survey. The AMC said tenders have been invited for the first three works, which are intended to improve the rapid discharge of rainwater from the Bopal, Ghuma and Ratna Lake catchments.

The plan covers a total catchment area of around 11.50 sq km and is expected to benefit nearly 3.5 to 4 lakh residents. The proposed works include new stormwater lines, catch pits, interconnections and outfalls in areas where drainage networks are currently inadequate.

A new stormwater pumping station at Ratna Lake is also planned to facilitate the rapid discharge of excess rainwater collected in the lakes.

According to the AMC, the drainage network has been designed keeping future population growth in mind. The projects cover around 710.55 hectares across the Bopal, Ghuma and Ratna Lake catchments.

The civic body said the projects have been approved under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) framework, with funding shared in a 60:40 ratio between the NDMA and the Gujarat government.

Bopal and Ghuma were brought under the AMC limits in 2021. The area’s low-lying terrain and inadequate stormwater drainage have contributed to recurring waterlogging during heavy rainfall. DeshGujarat
