Rajkot: A senior doctor at Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay (PDU) Civil Hospital in Rajkot was detained by police today after allegedly slapping and threatening a female resident doctor during an argument over the treatment of a critically ill patient in the emergency ward.
The incident on August 20 triggered a protest by resident doctors outside the emergency building. They later called off their strike and resumed duty after filing a complaint against Dr Ashwin Vitthalbhai Ramani at Pradyumannagar Police Station.
According to the complaint filed by 26-year-old resident doctor Dr Krisha Nileshkumar Shingala, the incident occurred during her 24-hour emergency duty between 7:30 pm and 7:45 pm. She had brought a critically ill elderly patient to Dr Ramani and requested that the patient be kept in the emergency ward as he required ventilator support.
The matter reportedly escalated when Dr Ramani insisted that the patient be shifted to the general ward. During the argument, he allegedly abused and slapped Dr Shingala and threatened her. The incident was reportedly captured on CCTV cameras in the emergency ward.

Other hospital staff and security personnel intervened and brought the situation under control.
On August 21, the hospital’s RMO, Medical College Dean and other senior officials held a meeting with resident doctors over the incident and concerns regarding their safety. Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Monali Mankadia said the matter would be placed before the College Council and appropriate action would be taken.
Dr Shingala said she had previously complained about Dr Ramani’s alleged inappropriate behaviour but claimed no action was taken. She has sought strict action and demanded that the accused doctor not be assigned duties around her or in the hospital.
Resident doctors said the protest was aimed at ensuring a safe working environment and accountability within the hospital. DeshGujarat
