1500 people were evacuated from five villages of Surendranagar district’s Lakhtar taluka due to flood like situation after 17 inches of rain spell. They were brought to Lakhtar’s Public Health Centre. 400 of them were from Lakhtar itself while others were from surrounding villages. District administration and Hindu religious organizations arranged food and medicine supply for the flood victims.
Telephone and power supply networks were disrupted. Around dozen villages including Adalsar and Vadesar were out of reach. Viramgam-Surendranagar portion of Ahmedabad-Surendranagar highway was blocked by flooding water near Kadu village. Settlements in low lying areas of Bhogavo river were alerted by district administration after added income of water in Nayka dam. Nayka dam’s level was at 17 ft in the morning. 10 Talukas of Surendranagar district had 6 to 12 inches of rains. Highest was experienced in Lakhtar taluka. Chotila taluka had 8 to 10 inches rain.
Interestingly Lakhtar-Wadhvan belt in Surendranagar district was on the verge of water scarcity and possible drought this year due to insufficient rain and empty dams with just 30% water. Situation changed in just last two days when after initial shower and drizzle heavy rain fell ensuring great relief to the worrying people.
On Wednesday 196 talukas of Gujarat experienced rain, among which, Lakhtar taluka had the highest.
