It’s Gujarat’s authentic mer (maher) Dandiya raas from Porbandar(Saurashtra) being performed at Royal Albert London in video. Look at how this dance starts at slow pace and then incrementally catches a speed at last. Look at the authentic styles, look how they can bend their legs, how they jump together. It’s difficult to do but these guys are trained since their childhood to do these dance tricks.

And this is Porbandar’s Maher community’s very famous sword dance. This is actually a warrior dance in which warriors are motivated to fight aggressively. Song being sung is Shivaji’s halardu.

It is called “Vilambit Raas”. It has “vilamb” in its Dhol beats. In general drum beats are in multiple of 4 and 2. This Raas has 4.5 beats. Its very hard to play, sing and dance. It looks slow in the beginning but ask the players who performs this dance. Its truly amazing and these players perfomrs gracefully. Jai Jai Garavi Gujarat.

Indeed a matter of proud for all Indians and especially us Gujaratis…….
The form of dance reminds us how rich our culture is.
This becomes even more special for so many of Gujaratis who are living outside India in some western countries. When we see such marvelous show of our age old dancing skills, we do realize what the Hip-Hop, Break Dance and all other western forms of dance are missing in them.
Congratulations to the people involved.
Jai jai Garvi Gujarat
