Vadodara’s Planetarium to have advanced telescope

The Sardar Patel planetarium situated at Sayaji garden in Vadodara has ordered fully computerized digital ‘Schmidt Cassegrain’ 11-inch telescope from U.S.

People of Vadodara will be able to explore the sky more deeply and see objects like nebula and galaxies by using this telescope. This telescope will be the first of its kind in Gujarat. Approximate cost of the telescope is Rs 413,844. Telescope is expected to arrive this month.

The CPC 1100 GPS (XLT) telescope made by Celestron is the latest in its class and is fully computerized with in-built computer which can store up to 40,000 celestial objects in its database. It also has a ground positioning system(GPS) which can locate 16 satellites simultaneously. With its limiting magnitude of 15, the visual becomes 3000 to 6000 times larger and hence cleared.

With many other extra digital features the most beneficial part of that telescope can be attached to a big screen so that thousands of people can watch celestial events. Events can be telecasted too via this telescope.

Current version of telescope at Sardar Patel planetarium is almost 35 year old German made which is manually operated. With the latest digital telescope one can explore and be able to see the deep sky objects, every event related to the sun like solar flares and sun spots. The sun filter attached to the telescope protects it from getting damaged. The study of the moon, planets, comets and natural satellited becomes easy with the help of this digital telescope.

Sardar Patel Planetarium is situated at Sayaji Baug, in Vadodara, Gujarat. It functions six days a week and runs three shows daily. The shows are conducted in different languages such as English, Gujarati and Hindi. The planetarium has a vast building with a seating capacity of around 200 people. A one hour sessions covers audio and video clips of the Solar system, satellites, astronomical history as well as India’s space age activities.
