The country’s largest butterfly park is ready to be thrown open for public on Friday. To be inaugurated by mayor Ranjit Gilitwala at Sarthana Nature Park here, the park will house over 30 species of the insect in an area of over 70,000 sq metre.
The idea had been mooted three years ago to protect thousands of butterflies that live on the 81-acre land of Sarthana. The park will also have a gardening area, walkway, breeding house, water fall and rock garden. This apart, over 12,000 host and nectar plants of 75 different species have been planted in the park.
Said Dr Praful Mehta, incharge zoo superintendent of Sarthana Nature Park, “As a butterfly can fly only if its body temperature is 34.67 degree Celsius, one cannot see many butterflies in winter and during foggy days. This is the prime reason why we have kept visiting hours of this park from 10 am to 2 pm.”
Furthermore, work for Wildlife Interpretation Centre is on at the butterfly park. As there are thousands of butterflies in the park, authorities will not need any from outside. “These insects will get ample food and an environment to breed and shelter in the park, so they will not migrate to any other place,” he added.
Soon, the park will have facilities like a museum and theatre. For an entry fee of Rs 10, visitors can see species like Common Indian Crow, Stripped tiger, Blue tiger, Indian Cupid, Red Pirate, Blue Pansy, Common Castor, Common Leopard, Grey Pansy. “This will become the largest as another park in Bangalore is housed in a 1,000-sq mt area,” Mehta added.
