To attract and encourage more people to use public toilets instead of open plots, Gujarat’s Rajkot city’s civic authority has come with a unique idea. Soon public toilets in Rajkot will have facilities like television set, music system and newspapers inside.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation’s Standing committee meeting on Saturday cleared a proposal for this.

“Amenities such as television set, radio, daily newspapers, magazines, sofa, table etc. will be available in proposed toilet boxes. Initially three such toilet boxes are to be opened near Galaxy theater, at AG chowk and Racecourse locations,” Chairman of the standing committee Dr.Jaymin Upadhyay said.

“One such toilet block would cost Rs 15 lakh. Cost will be bared by a private party which would earn by getting advertisement on the toilet blocks because toilet boxes are to be located at the prime places in the city. The private party will give Rs 5100 rental every month to the Municipal Corporation. The party will maintain and run the blocks under Municipal Corporation’s supervision. Contract to the party is given after proper tender issuing process,” Upadhyay said.
