Gujarat’s Girnar Mountain Climbing Contest on January 4th

Annual Mount Girnar Climbing Contest will be held on January 4th in Junagadh. This year 1448 boys and 347 girls from 16 districts are going to participate in the contest. Permited age group to participate in the competition is 14to 35.
The contest for Boys will start at 7:00 a.m. 10 Contestants would depart in each group. On rifle’s firing voice, total 147 groups will depart at 20 second intervals. Girls contest will start at 10:00 a.m. Each group will include 10 girls. Such 34 groups will depart to climb the Mount Girnar.
Boys will have to climb(and return back) mount Girnar up to Ambaji temple which is located at 5000 steps height. Girls will climb 2200 steps and return back.
The competition was first started by Saurashtra-based Gujarati daily Phoolchaab in 1971. In 1979 the state government took over the event. Mount Girnar is Gujarat’s tallest peak.
