India’s largest university proposed by Vedanta Resources founder Anil Agarwal is coming up in Orissa, but it was originally planned for Gujarat.

In answer to question asked by DeshGujarat, Group’s founder chairman Anil Agrawal revealed this fact on Wednesday during his interaction session in IIM Ahmedabad.

When asked about his plans to enter Gujarat, if any, Agarwal said, “Gujarat is the most developed. Its amazing how business going on here. While everybody is talking about business in energy, we thought of setting up old time Vaghas based power plant. But I haven’t figured it out. I wanted to set up a university here but then we went to Puri(Orissa). But I will be looking forward for something to start in Gujarat, that’s sure. We have something in silvassa but not in Gujarat.”

It should be mentioned here that, once ready, the proposed Vedanta University would be the largest university campus in the country. The university will come up over 4,000 land with an airport, three five-star hotels, Olympic standard football ground, at least 6,000 faculties and about one lakh students. There will be a modern town inside the campus with all facilities.

Though Agarwal didn’t mention how a decision to shift the idea of setting up a university to Orrissa happened, it was understood from his speech that, as his major mining projects are located in Orissa, it could have been thought of to give away this major project to eastern India in general and Orissa in particular.
