One-day strike call in Kutch peaceful
Bhuj, DeshGujarat, 20 July 2010
After one-day bandh call for local market, postcard writing movement, submitting memorandum to local minister, blood donation camp, dharna, and series of various other types of agitations for last 13 days, the families of 13 traders of Bhuj, jailed for their involvement in Bhuj market land scam, have given one-day ‘Kutch bandh’ call on Tuesday – 20th of July demanding bail to the traders imprisoned in jail. An agitation run by family member of jailed traders is focused on generating support for the jailed traders to facilitate their early release. The family members and their supporters want traders to free on bail. They want to put pressure on government for this cause. They ask if murderers can also get bail, why traders jailed for corruption can not be freed on bail.
Apart from the bandh call, there will be a rally of women in Bhuj on Tuesday morning demanding release of 13 traders. The bandh call has received support of 30 different local organizations.
-13 traders are in jail because even Gujarat High Court denied bail to them. They are in jail for making fake documents, category certificates, and getting market yard shops that were meant for the earthquake victims.
-There is possibility of arrests of more 118 traders. The jailed traders and next vulnerable group of traders along with their family members are fueling the Kutch fight to make pressure on government and possibly on court to prevent further arrests and bail to presently jailed ones.
-The state government and BJP representatives have reportedly told the agitating traders and their families that the issue has been brought to court by some traders only. As the issue is in court, the government or BJP has nothing to do with it.
-There is also a possibility that the agitation could be taken as contempt of court and it could prove boomerang.
