Gujarat IPS officer booked for disproportionate assets
Gandhinagar, 9 July, 2011
An IPS officer was booked by the anti-corruption bureau(ACB) in Gujarat on Friday.
M.D.Jani, superintendent of police, motor vehicles and transport (MT) section, was found to have cash worth more than Rs 14 lakh, the source of which the cop could not explain. Jani was recruited as a deputy superintendent of police in 1995 and was later promoted to IPS cadre in 2008.
When police officials calculated assets owned by Jani and his salary, they found the amount to be 48 per cent higher than it should have been. Thus a complaint of disproportionate assets (DA) has been filed against him along with a criminal complaint for forgery, as he used fictitious names to draw demand drafts.
According to ACB officials, it was Income Tax department that informed Enforcement Directorate (ED) about the transactions of Jani. ED then tracked the trail of money and found Jani involved. As the case involved an IPS officer, it required special permission from the state government. Therefore the officials then informed the state government in 2008 after which an inquiry was initiated.
Jani had drawn a total of 38 demand drafts on different names from a cooperative bank account in Surat in 2007 during his stint in the city. All the drafts were for an amount Rs 49,000. The reason being, if the drawer has draft of or more than Rs 50,000, the PAN details had to be included. To evade the procedure, he got fictitious names and paid a total of Rs 18.62 lakh towards a private life insurance company. He had taken policies of Rs 19 lakh on the names of his relatives.
