In pictures: Rabari and Bharwad community members from Kutch visit Narendra Modi to thank him

Ahmedabad, 3 July 2012

Rabari and Bharwad community members from Adhoi village of Kutch today paid visit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar to thank him for timely rescue of 10 community members who were lost in Little Rann of Kutch last week. The Maldharis were rescued from the Rann area through Air Force helicopters. A group of Maldharis was led by BJP MLA Jayantibhai Bhanushali. BJP leader Arjanbhai Rabari who had extended timely help to the victims was also present. The Chief Minister heard detail narration of what difficulties the victims faced when they were in Rann for hours without any communication or way out. It should be mentioned that those lost in the rann first called the locals through mobile phone. The locals approached Arjanbhai Rabari who contacted district collector. It was timely intervention of Surendranagar and Kutch district collectors that resulted into a decision to call Indian Air Force for rescue. Few jawans of Surendranagar district police also played a major role in locating the maldharis.

,The comments made by senior Congress leader Shankarsinh Vaghela at a minority community meeting that the party depends on Muslim vote for victory in the ensuing assembly elections and they should come out in large number to vote, has raised eyebrows.

“We are dependent on you. The Congress already bears the accusation of being a pro-Muslim party… So the onus of making us victorious is on you. Your lower turnout will not do… You have to come out in large number this time,” Vaghela said speaking at the Congress minority cell meeting in Koba town of Gandhinagar district on Sunday.

Vaghela, referring to 1997 by-elections he fought from Radhanpur constituency had further said, “I became infamous as Shankarulla Khan in Radhanpur because of you (Muslims)”.

During that elections, his pictures wearing skull cap were circulated by the rival candidates.

The comments of Vagehla, who had his roots in RSS before joining the Congress, left the Congress embarrassed but the local leaders refused to say anything on it. But this has given BJP a chance to hit out at Congress.

The party spokesperson Vijay Rupani said, “This shows that the Congress is treating Muslims as a vote bank and it is not really interested in the welfare of the community but only in seeking their votes.”.
