Narhari Amin resigns from Gujarat Cricket Association
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 28 June, 2009
Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) president and Congress leader Narhari Amin today resigned from his post after a 16-year reign. Amin had no option but to resign after his panel’s huge defeat in Central Cricket Board of Ahmedabad election recently. Amin’s panel was defeated by Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home Amit Shah’s panel. Central Cricket Board of Ahmedabad (CBCA) sends the highest number of 11 members to GCA executive council. After Shah group’s victory in CBCA, defeat of Amin from GCA was imminent.
“I have been unopposed as president of GCA since 1993. There has been a movement from the BJP group to wrest control of GCA for some time now. So I have resigned,” Amin, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, told reporters here.
“The situation has become such that now elections would have been enforced for the control of GCA. So, I thought it fit to resign from my post,” he said.
For the last one year, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s right hand man and Minister of State for Home, Amit Shah had started a campaign for the ouster of Amin.
Amin submitted his resignation to GCA vice-president Vikram Patel and as per rules of the association, Patel has to call a general body meeting of the GCA within 15 days to elect a new president.
“I was elected as president in 1993. At that time it was a debt ridden association having dues of more than Rs. eight crores,” Amin said.
“Now when I am leaving, GCA has reserve funds of Rs 40 crore,” he added.
