MBBS Students Among Six Caught Using ChatGPT for Cheating in VNSGU Exams

Surat: In the latest case of cheating using artificial intelligence tools, six students, including two from the MBBS course, were caught allegedly using ChatGPT to answer exam papers at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in the city.

University officials said the students used mobile phones and Bluetooth devices to access AI-generated responses in real time. The authorities have imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the six students and cancelled their ongoing examinations.

The incident is part of a broader crackdown on malpractice, with a total of 229 students found involved in various forms of cheating during surprise inspections conducted by the university’s examination squad. Of these, 153 appeared for hearings before the Malpractice Enquiry Committee (MPEC), while 73 remained absent and now face ex parte action.

Officials said instances of malpractice ranged from traditional methods such as using slips and writing on body parts to more unconventional tactics. In three cases, students attempted to bribe examiners by attaching Rs 100 notes to their answer sheets along with written requests asking to be passed.

According to data released by the university, 94 cases involved possession of written material, 45 cases involved copying from slips, and 17 cases involved writing on hands or feet. Additionally, 15 cases involved writing on clothing or other surfaces, while 11 cases each were related to the use of mobile phones and electronic devices. Six cases specifically involved the use of ChatGPT, while three involved currency notes placed inside answer sheets.

Examination Director A.V. Dhaduk said strict action, including fines and cancellation of exams, will be taken against all students found guilty. However, the university has also adopted a corrective approach, with 14 students referred to the Psychological Guidance and Counselling Centre after being found to be under stress or facing personal issues.

Officials said the incidents highlight both the growing misuse of technology and the persistence of conventional cheating methods, underscoring the need for stricter monitoring and greater awareness among students about the consequences of malpractice. DeshGujarat
