Students Caught in GCAS Row as St Xavier’s and GU Issue Separate Merit Lists

Ahmedabad: Students aspiring to secure admission to St Xavier’s College have been caught in a state of confusion after both Gujarat University (GU) and the college separately released merit lists and initiated the admission process.

On Tuesday, Gujarat University allotted seats to candidates through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal, including those who had opted for St Xavier’s College. At the same time, the college published its own merit list and began offering admissions independently, resulting in a conflict over seat allocation.

The parallel admission processes have created uncertainty among students, who remain unsure about which admissions will ultimately be recognised. The issue is currently before the Gujarat High Court, which is scheduled to hear the matter on June 8.

The first round of admissions under GCAS has already commenced across government and private universities in the state. However, St Xavier’s decision not to participate in the centralised admission system has complicated matters. Students allotted seats at the college through GCAS are unable to confirm their admissions, while those admitted directly by the institution face uncertainty regarding university approval.

Fr. David of St Xavier’s reiterated the college’s opposition to the GCAS system. He said the institution had briefly released a direct merit list before withdrawing it amid the ongoing dispute and would now proceed in accordance with the High Court’s directions.

Meanwhile, representatives of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) submitted a memorandum to the college administration, urging both the institution and the state government to safeguard students’ interests. NSUI members said college authorities have indicated that clarity on the admission process is expected following the High Court hearing on June 8. DeshGujarat
